AVATAR Yourself

Birth-of-an-Avatar If you love a sports team, you buy the player's jersey. Love AVATAR? PhotoShop yourself as a Na'vi, like Peter Ammentorp Lund did. Not impressed yet? It took Kailey Michelle a day to pull this one off, while Vahag'n Azaryan jokes that he's the first Armenian avatar and flyflybluedragonfly just looks cool. In fact there's just a ton of human-Na'vi hybrids at the Flickr Avatar Fan Zone pool, and a wider range of fan-created art at the James Cameron's Avatar pool and The Na'vi! pool. And you just knew this was going to cross over into Second Life.

How do you look as a Na'vi?

AVATAR: How Big Will It Get?

Avatar movie poster (fan) The Vatican panned AVATAR and at least one Marine Corps officer is offended, but still: AVATAR topped domestic box-office for the fourth week and is now the second-highest grossing film of all time. It also had the biggest open China's seen despite a massive snowstorm, and now overtaking Titanic's $1.84 billion worldwide haul with $2 billion of its own is no longer out of the question. (You wouldn't know it from sales, but AVATAR is also the most-pirated via torrent sites.)

It's getting to the point where whatever movie finally displaces AVATAR from the number-one spot will be a trivia question. In other surprises, the percentage of 3-D tickets sold just keeps climbing even though they're usually pricier, as moviegoers seeing it in 2-D then migrate to a 3-D showing.

What do you think - how big will AVATAR get?

AVATAR Headed for 3D TV in 2012?

Avatar43 As though AVATAR hasn't already made epic amounts of money, FX TV has purchased the basic cable rights (HBO already owns the pay-cable rights) to the flick for a cool $25–30 million, and can start airing in mid-2012. Good thing the price is probably capped or FX would have had to shell out millions more, but in any case, buy some glasses 'cause FX could choose to air it in 3-D. Better start brushing up on your Na'vi now.

AVATAR as a TV series - good idea or too much of a good thing?

AVATAR Sequel and Details Confirmed

Helicordian big After muttering about how an AVATAR franchise would make sense and hinting that there could be a trilogy of AVATAR films, James Cameron has confirmed that there will be an AVATAR sequel, fueling speculation about how it might top the original.

Things we do know: There are two planned sequels but they won't be one continuous story, they'll be self-contained. They'll also follow Jake and Neytiri. It could take place around a different moon of Polyphemus this time, although producer Jon Landau has already hinted about exploring Pandora's interior. Some bloggers guess that James Cameron, famously obsessed with water, has an amazing underwater environment mapped out for Pandora. There are also different Na'vi tribes that call the planet their home and we never really got a sense of how intra-species politics work between the different tribes. Cameron confirmed he’s mapped out what will happen in the sequels, although he hasn’t written any scripts yet.

The good news? The sequels won't take four years to make. Cameron has said he can get them out faster than the first AVATAR.

Secret Scenes On the AVATAR DVD?

Avatar_lovecrop When Jake's avatar and Neytiri have sex, you see only a small amount of alien petting. After all, it's a movie about blue creatures, not a blue movie. But there was a larger sex scene that was filmed but then cut, and Zoe Saldana hints that it had something to do with syncing the two participants' ponytails. Of course, if the Na'vi use hair-syncing both for sex and to communicate with everything else on Pandora, you get some pretty squicky issues. Still, Zoe Saldana says, "We had a lot of giggles there" during filming.

You'll be able to see it on the DVD, and when you finally get your mind out of the gutter, there'll be another 10-minute scene of Jake going through a trial to gain membership in the tribe: the hunt for a rhino-like sturmbeest.

Avatar Passes $1 Billion in 17 Days

Avatar 1B Looks as though James Cameron has created another Titanic-sized movie: Avatar passed the $1 billion mark worldwide this weekend, “only the fifth movie in history to ever do so,” says FirstShowing.net. “It only needs $800 million more worldwide to pass Titanic, could it happen?” Well, “haters may take some vanishingly small measure of solace in the fact that ticket price inflation means that despite the incredible financial haul, it may have been seen by only half as many people as Titanic,” points out Boing Boing, and “Avatar is being helped by higher ticket prices for 3-D viewings of the film,” says Silicon Alley Insider. But “Avatar will also no doubt be the biggest Blu-ray release to date when it comes to home video,” says Screen Rant. “Fox was right in investing in Cameron’s return to cinema and giving him all the time he needed to do it right.”
