AVATAR: How Big Will It Get?
The Vatican panned AVATAR and at least one Marine Corps officer is offended, but still: AVATAR topped domestic box-office for the fourth week and is now the second-highest grossing film of all time. It also had the biggest open China's seen despite a massive snowstorm, and now overtaking Titanic's $1.84 billion worldwide haul with $2 billion of its own is no longer out of the question. (You wouldn't know it from sales, but AVATAR is also the most-pirated via torrent sites.)
It's getting to the point where whatever movie finally displaces AVATAR from the number-one spot will be a trivia question. In other surprises, the percentage of 3-D tickets sold just keeps climbing even though they're usually pricier, as moviegoers seeing it in 2-D then migrate to a 3-D showing.

In my opinion if the film still keep spreading mouth to mouth, it will overtake titanic and will probably blast off the 2000 million barrier!

the vatican is a bunch of w*nk. they are just upset because this movie has made people realise that nature is something to be revered, and they cant handle losing power.

seems so contradictory, here's a movie that espouses everything that the church supposedly stands for and they put it down. Not to offend but I'm sure JC (and I don't mean James Cameron) would not do that, but too many 'humans' are just narrow-minded

and let's not only beat Titanic - but adjusted for inflation let's go for Gone With The Wind as well, and make this movie the all-time greatest at the box-office

More than making up for that, though, is the impossible imagination of James Cameron, who has carefully given birth to something phenomenal to look at it, even if it's not always enveloping to watch. It must be said of the 3-D that it has never looked better, neither for live action nor animation. This is, of course, a mixture of that thanks to the extreme reliance on computers to bring Pandora to life. Outside of the physical drain of wearing 3-D glasses for nearly three full hours (you'll rub your eyes a couple of times), you're likely to forget all about the way you're watching Avatar.

OK. I went and saw Avatar this morning. I had the typical reaction—awesome effects, predictable story, one-dimensional characters, horrible dialog, but none of that was surprising to me and overall I think It had a good message. This is where my real problem is with the movie. The message is totally antithetical to what the movie actually promotes. Live more simply with the earth it says to the middle class consumer, but after the movie go hop in your SUV buy the video game, buy the toys for your 2.5 children, then stop for a cross-promotional-synergistic happymeal at McyDee's and help destroy the same environment you were just told to value while exploiting labor forces in third world nations to make the toys all of which rely on a ton of oil(unobtanium).

Re: The Vatican.... OMFG.
Why the hell should they give a crap it's movie, not real..... even if the Na'Vi existed, the Vatican would have no control or jurisdiction over them....

As for Avatar, Grow Grow and keep growing. We want to learn more about Pandora and it's secrets.

It's the biggest movie ever and will be for a long time. It's got people wishing they could live as Na'vi on Pandora, including me. Or at least have Avatars.

After the Golden Globes win tonight, I'm sure all the people who have been "on the fence" will go see it. I hope it surpasses TITANIC, too (even though my Great-Uncle Fred went down on it...)
